New details on OpenAI's Navier-Stokes announcement: the company restarted its largest frontier RL run on August 28, and an internal checkpoint of that run — significantly more capable than Astra — solved the problem at a cost of millions of dollars. OpenAI says the model shows unprecedented benchmark performance in mathematics, training is ongoing, and crucially the new model at the lowest tested compute settings comfortably beats Astra at the highest settings.
