Economist trials AI icons to disclose generative AI use in academic work

Economist Paul Novosad is trialing a practice of adding an AI icon whenever generative AI is used in his figures or writing. His argument: using AI is fine as long as you don't misrepresent that it implies less care and oversight — it's a disclaimer like "AI-generated figure, don't cite without verification." The problem arises when AI output is passed off as carefully curated work.
