PINN discovers evidence of stable finite-time singularity in 3D Euler equations
Dr_Singularity · x · 2026-09-09
Anima Anandkumar's Caltech team reports evidence for a stable, self-similar finite-time singularity in the 3D Euler equations in free space (R³) without boundaries or forcing. They use a physics-informed neural network to discover the candidate blowup, with certified numerical bounds supporting stability. The blowup problem relates to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem; prior work (Hou & Chen 2022) only covered the boundary case. A key challenge was preventing PINNs from converging to trivial solutions. Companion papers are linked.
