Coding agents can't recall why code changed — inline comments help, but the jury is still out
RubyBrewsday · x · 2026-09-09
Developer RubyBrewsday notes that on larger codebases, a core challenge is recalling decisions behind code changes: agents won't proactively search file history before making adjustments. His team has tried adding more helpful inline comments as a mitigation, but it's unclear how much they help. An experience-based discussion of agents' lack of codebase history awareness.
