Ben Bajarin's Custom Silicon 3.0 report argues the custom ASIC market is shifting from design wins to "program responsibility": customers now mix and match compute, I/O, networking, and front-side/back-side services across suppliers, so revenue and margins depend on retained IP and design services. As Google and Amazon deepen in-house tooling, the mix-and-match model should spread to customers with less internal IP. The report still favors GPU flexibility on TCO, since models keep changing and inference workloads vary widely in memory and latency; ASICs retain an edge only where customers control large, predictable workloads.
