Kevin Roose: OpenAI, Anthropic and DeepMind are fueled by mutual spite more than outsiders see
kevinroose · x · 2026-09-08
NYT journalist Kevin Roose, who is writing a book about the AGI race, says the labs (OpenAI/Anthropic, OpenAI/DeepMind) are fueled by spite for each other to a degree that isn't obvious from outside:
- Partly fights over credit for famous math problems
- Partly personal animosity between leaders
His take: great dramatic fodder for a book, but bad news if the goal is for labs to cooperate on safety and pacing.
