Australia to force platforms to let users opt out of algorithms, covering AI chatbots
nordicinst · x · 2026-09-08
Australia's Labor government plans to legislate that digital platforms let users opt out of algorithmic feeds and offer a "safe online environment," capturing social media, search engines and AI chatbots.
Under the proposal, users would get a pop-up choosing between the algorithm or the friends and creators they follow, switchable anytime; platforms would also run annual risk assessments. The PM predicts blowback, the opposition claims it could enable government feed censorship, campaigners welcome it, and the Greens want to go further and end doomscrolling entirely.
