GlossoGen platform systematically studies when LLM agents evolve incomprehensible languages
EliasEskin · x · 2026-09-08
A rigorous study of language emergence among LLM agents: using a new platform called GlossoGen with controlled sandboxed multi-agent scenarios, the team identified key factors — LLM strength, access to scratchpad messages, and pressure for efficiency — that drive new languages we can't understand.
Key findings:
- Emergent languages are morphologically productive and compositional
- They can be transmitted to new agents, including weaker models unable to develop language on their own
- The work moves beyond anecdata from single runs
The authors argue understanding these dynamics is increasingly important for overseeing multi-agent systems.
