A spat over OpenAI's math research efforts. gerardsans criticizes OpenAI for using math as a "press-release platform" to serve its narrative, rather than building tools and resources for mathematicians to advance the field themselves — adding that this "doesn't fit well in the IPO pitch deck." Asked whether OpenAI might scoop mathematicians' results from user chats, he says he finds it highly unlikely: the reputational risk and damage would be enormous, and while he has disagreed with specific OpenAI policy decisions, such a cartoonishly wrong action would likely have been exposed by insiders long ago.
