Designer fakes an entire portfolio with Astra: "Hiring is dead"
AIandDesign · x · 2026-09-08
Marco van Hylckama Vlieg had Google Astra fake a complete senior product designer portfolio, deployed on Vercel: five fictional projects (Relay, Lumen House Energy, Morrowgate Health, etc.) complete with plausible outcome metrics like '38% lower median resolution time' and convincing career narratives. The result is indistinguishable from real work — and 'everyone shrugged.'
His takeaway: when AI can fabricate convincing hiring portfolios in minutes, traditional screening is broken — 'Hiring is dead. There are no jobs.' Both a portfolio-authenticity problem and a concrete case of AI disrupting design-industry hiring.
