A developer built 56k.rip using ChatGPT to recreate the 1996 dial-up web experience: artificial latency, network bottlenecks, and Windows 95 UI.
What worked:
- JS throttling logic prompting ChatGPT to simulate peak vs. off-peak modem speeds and hidden trigger states
- Rapid generation of late-90s CSS, table-heavy layouts, and Win95 styling
What failed:
- Frame isolation: ChatGPT couldn't keep CSS scope contained inside the simulated browser frame, leaking styles into the parent desktop and requiring manual structural fixes.
An interesting exercise in using LLMs to build period-accurate artificial constraints.
