ChatGPT's memory keeps dragging old conversations into unrelated new questions

A Reddit user complains that ChatGPT overuses its memory feature: it repeatedly forces connections between the current question and topics from completely separate past conversations, then uses them to guess what the user wants next — even when explicitly instructed to only use memory when genuinely relevant.
The user wants each new question treated independently by default without disabling memory entirely, and is asking whether anyone has found a reliable way to control this behavior.
