Seattle Times and Newsday sue OpenAI and Microsoft, seek destruction of infringing models

The Seattle Times and Newsday sued OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging unauthorized copying across both AI training and generated outputs, including paywalled journalism that the models can reproduce or closely paraphrase. The complaint also alleges trademark dilution via fabricated material attributed to their brands.
They seek damages and destruction of training sets and AI models containing their work — a remedy no court has ordered. Notably, the Seattle Times previously received Microsoft philanthropy support and joined a $10M AI fellowship funded by Microsoft and OpenAI, which did not prevent the dispute.
