Super Smash Bros Melee fully decompiled after 6 years, with LLMs accelerating the final stretch

banteg highlights that the doldecomp project has fully decompiled Super Smash Bros Melee. Started in July 2020, the effort took over six years on a 3.88MB compiled binary, with progress hugely accelerated by LLMs and finished off with astra.

The GitHub repo (1.2k stars, 3,751 commits) builds a main.dol matching the original SHA-1 (v1.02, GALE01) and supports shiftable builds — code can be added or removed on top of the decompiled source for modding or research.

It's a landmark example of LLMs assisting massive-scale reverse engineering, compressing what traditionally required years of team effort.
