Karpathy: I've never felt this far behind — the programming profession is being refactored

Andrej Karpathy writes that he's "never felt this much behind as a programmer" — the profession is being dramatically refactored as the programmer's own contributions grow sparse. He believes he could be 10X more powerful by properly stringing together what's emerged over the past year, and describes a new programmable abstraction layer spanning agents, subagents, prompts, contexts, memory, modes, permissions, tools, plugins, skills, hooks, MCP, LSP, slash commands, workflows, and IDE integrations — all demanding an all-encompassing mental model.
