Lab locked out of its OpenAI org since Aug 28; support bots pass the buck as a 'benchmark task'
gregd_nlp · x · 2026-09-08
An NLP researcher reports that since Aug 28 his lab cannot authenticate to the OpenAI org it has used since 2021. All three PhD-student admins hit the same issue, and they've had no access to usage, billing, or payment management since.
OpenAI's support experience is a chain of bots requesting ever more diagnostic tests — "Jeffrey" got stumped so "James" stepped in, to no avail. The author jokes the problem is hard enough to be a benchmark task.
