The World Bank's "small AI" approach is taking off in India: cheap, narrow-purpose tools—no giant models or data centers—answering one farmer's question on a basic smartphone with patchy internet, in the farmer's own language.
- Kerala: The KATHIR platform combines satellite imagery with AI analytics to push localized weather alerts, sowing advice, and crop disease detection. Farmers upload a photo of a sick plant and get a diagnosis back. It also maps crops (counting coconut trees, estimating yields) so subsidies and disaster relief land correctly, covering 3M+ farmers and 1.1M hectares.
- Maharashtra: The generative AI chatbot MahaVISTAAR accepts voice questions in local dialects, searches trusted agricultural research sources, and returns district-tailored answers with citations—covering pests, market prices, and weather. It hit 3M+ downloads within months.
Next step is action rather than advice: Maharashtra wants the bot to fill benefit transfer forms; Kerala's verified farm data is helping banks design loan products. Both sit under the World Bank's AgriConnect push targeting 300 million smallholder farmers worldwide.
