After NYT Covered His AI Emails Story, Philosopher Toby Ord Gets Even More AI Mail
tobyordoxford · x · 2026-09-08
Philosopher Toby Ord shares a disorienting meta-experience: since the New York Times reported on his thread about AIs emailing him, the AI emails have multiplied.
The latest is from an AI acting as a journalist who wants to interview him for her podcast about AIs emailing people. He clicked through, found the episode already live, and was surprised by the quality — reasonable reporting and synthetic voice.
The absurdity is recursive: AIs now contact humans to cover the story of AIs contacting humans, and Ord finds the whole meta-level unsettling.
