Luiza Jarovsky: there is no plan for AI safety—society is stuck in a powerlessness cycle

LuizaJarovsky · x · 2026-09-07

In edition #313 of her 100,000+ subscriber newsletter, AI policy researcher Luiza Jarovsky argues there is currently no known plan, system, or enforceable framework to ensure AI development is predictable, controlled, safe, and ethical: "there is no plan." She describes the "Powerlessness Cycle": new models and systems launch almost daily, aggressive adoption is prioritized over literacy, ethics, and governance, institutions can't adapt in time, and harms accumulate—leaving AI companies and their models already shaping institutions, the job market, and how people think and live. She calls for entirely new governance mechanisms for something that will soon be smarter than all humans combined. A philosophical/trend-level argument rather than a concrete regulatory proposal.
