Julian Lehr argues against the recurring claim that natural language is the next computing paradigm — a cycle we've seen with Siri, smart speakers, chatbots, and now LLMs. His core argument: natural language is just a data-transfer mechanism optimized for human cognitive bandwidth, slow and lossy compared to structured GUIs. "Natural" doesn't mean "the logical end state" — the obsession stems partly from Star Trek-fueled anemoia. Conversational interfaces fit specific contexts but won't replace graphical interfaces.
