OpenAI says AI agents now do 3.1 workdays per human day, as chief scientist warns alignment lags

OpenAI reports that AI agents in its own research already deliver 3.1 workdays for every human workday, saying it has hit its goal of an "automated research intern."

Yet chief scientist Jakub Pachocki warns that no lab has a good enough grip on alignment and monitoring to keep scaling at maximum speed — putting the gap between capability progress and safety readiness on display inside OpenAI itself.
