iamtrask on AI escape: OpenAI can still pull the plug and read every log
nitarshan · x · 2026-09-07
In a debate on AI risk, iamtrask pushes back on a claim about AI escape scenarios: he says the other side is conflating communication with location, a distinction that matters enormously for safety. As long as a model runs on OpenAI's own servers, OpenAI retains the ultimate controls — it can shut the servers down and inspect every inference log. If an AI actually escaped into the wild, those levers would disappear, making that a categorically different risk.
