Tsinghua's OpenMAIC Turns Any PDF into an AI Classroom, 32k GitHub Stars

Tsinghua's THU-MAIC team open-sourced OpenMAIC, an open multi-agent interactive classroom system that has earned 32.1k stars and 5.3k forks on GitHub. Users upload a PDF, PPT, audio or video and describe their goal in one sentence (e.g. "a 30-minute intro course for PMs with no ML background"); the agent analyzes the material, searches background info, drafts an adjustable syllabus, then produces lesson pages with narration scripts, AI voiceover and synchronized highlights, plus AI classmates for discussion. It ships with 20 skills spanning planning, slides, quizzes, project-based learning, images, video and speech, choosing tools autonomously.
The article contrasts it with Gamma/Canva (slide designers), NotebookLM (material digesting) and ChatGPT/Claude (general assistants): OpenMAIC delivers a fully orchestrated learning process rather than courseware. Testers turned a new book into a 10-page course and dissected the Kimi K3 technical report, though v1.0 suffers from slow generation and hallucinations.
Project lead Jifan Yu, who studied under Songson Tang and Jie Tang and previously headed Zhipu's AIGC center, argues learning is "a mild act of mental violence" and that AI should organize teaching live rather than merely recommend content — but insists the goal is not replacing teachers, whose authority and emotional connection remain irreplaceable.
