DeepMind's Astra builds its own metamaterials lab, finds design with 2.1x strength ratio

An MIT researcher demonstrates Google DeepMind's Astra agent designing metamaterials end-to-end: starting from a single image of a biological microstructure, Astra built a complete 3D metamaterial studio — editable geometry, multi-level hierarchy, a linear/nonlinear physics simulator with deformation and fracture experiments, and STL export for 3D printing. Asked to search for high work-to-failure/peak-strength designs using its own app, the leading candidate reached 2.1x the reference ratio. The author calls this a game-changing threshold: the agent invents its own scientific instruments.
