Bloomberg reports Malaysia is evaluating Huawei's Ascend 910C accelerators for its $494 million sovereign AI project, despite explicit US warnings against the hardware. State-linked Telekom Malaysia is the project's key operator, with the priority of keeping sensitive government, military, and intelligence data under Malaysian control. Huawei already supplies Telekom Malaysia's cloud infrastructure, though its current AI computing service runs on Nvidia chips. The author notes China is no longer just building its own AI models but increasingly becoming a chip producer — still well behind Nvidia, but capable enough on its own.
