ShallowStream cuts streaming video understanding latency with shallow-layer index then deep answering
Jitai Hao · hf · 2026-09-07
ShallowStream is a new approach for streaming video understanding that builds a lightweight streaming index from the shallow layers of an MLLM. It quickly indexes incoming video with cheap shallow features, then applies deep reasoning only to retrieve relevant segments when answering. This "index shallow, answer deep" design substantially reduces latency in streaming settings while preserving accurate video retrieval.
