How compute-efficient is Astra? Estimates suggest 10x gap vs smaller labs

teortaxesTex · x · 2026-09-07

A back-of-envelope argument about the compute efficiency of OpenAI's Astra: with abundant GPUs, mature internal training infra, troves of synthetic data and its own strong teacher models, OpenAI's entry fee may be "<50K Blackwells", while Meta or DeepSeek might need "200K" for the same level. The compounding-advantage prior: in a year OpenAI could achieve with 100K chips what lesser labs need a million for. The author stresses these are genuine priors, not rhetorical questions.
