Waymo robotaxis launch in San Diego, Denver and Tampa as cycling groups voice rare support

Waymo has expanded its autonomous robotaxi service to San Diego, Denver and Tampa, with thousands of riders signing up on launch day. In August, the California Public Utilities Commission approved its expansion into Marin, Napa, Orange and Riverside counties, among others.

The expansion faced pushback from labor unions and safety advocates over labor standards and incidents where vehicles blocked first responders. Still, a coalition of 29 organizations backed Waymo before the CPUC — including CalBike, whose leader Kendra Ramsey praised Waymo for being open with the cycling community and for engineers' thoughtfulness in accommodating bicyclist behavior.
