Stripe launches Machine Payments so AI agents can pay for APIs programmatically

Stripe has launched Machine Payments (MPP), addressing the payment friction that blocks autonomous agents: monetizing an API traditionally requires account creation, subscription selection, and card entry — all human-in-the-loop steps.
How it works: your server returns a payment challenge, the agent presents a valid payment credential, and Stripe settles the payment to your balance. You can charge agents tiny amounts per unauthenticated API read or HTTP request, and price authenticated users differently.
The docs also cover agentic commerce concepts like x402, shared payment tokens, catalog feeds, Universal and Agentic Commerce Protocol, plus use cases such as selling through agents, monetizing MCP servers, and embedding commerce into AI interfaces. Jeff Weinstein (Stripe) framed it as a way to "charge agents a tiny amount to call your API or read your site."
