The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office says three novice hikers got stranded on Mt. Shasta and were rescued Monday by a search-and-rescue team and USFS climbing rangers.

- They summited at 7 p.m., tried descending in the dark, got lost, and one injured his knee in a fall.
- After rescue, one admitted they relied heavily on Google's Gemini for route info and packing lists.
- The sheriff's office said Gemini advised far less food and water than needed — the planned 8-hour ascent became a multi-day ordeal.
- Sheriff Jeremiah Larue warned that AI tends to give favorable answers and create a false sense of invincibility: a good tool, but not an expert. Standard local guidance is to turn back by noon even if short of the summit.
