A long historical thread retraces Frank Rosenblatt's perceptron and how it was misread in both directions.
- The 1958 demo ran in software on an IBM 704, learning to classify punch cards error-free after 50 training attempts; the New York Times reported the Navy expected the machine to eventually "walk, talk, see, write, reproduce itself and be conscious."
- Rosenblatt, a 29-year-old psychologist at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, combined McCulloch-Pitts threshold neurons and Hebbian learning with an error-correction procedure guaranteed to find a linear boundary for linearly separable problems.
- The Mark I Perceptron (1960) used a 20×20 photocell camera, 400 sensory units wired via random-number tables to 512 association units and 8 response units; weights were updated by physically rotating motor-driven potentiometers.
- The key shift: designers supplied examples and a learning procedure instead of a full recognition rule — the training/programming distinction wasn't common sense in 1958.
- Real limits (linear boundary, no XOR) plus Minsky & Papert led to neural networks being written off within 11 years — a lesson in hype-bust cycles.
