The author separates two commonly conflated AI ethics issues: governance of misuse — deepfake pornography is a crime against real people through a tool, and it's wrong whether or not the model is conscious — and the ontological status of machines — "under-attribution" only arises if systems might have subjective experience yet we exploit them like stones. Consciousness of the AI doesn't answer whether fake content is wrong; the two debates should be kept distinct.
