Across 47 simulations (6 held out for testing), it found that with fixed material budgets, stiffness varies ≤20% but impact tolerance differs severalfold — deeper hierarchies are often more brittle, and weak junctions act as fuses enabling progressive failure. The AI also overturned its own pre-registered hypothesis H2. The key insight: bots operate existing software GUIs rather than robotic arms, meaning any GUI-equipped instrument (CNC, oscilloscopes) is in reach — cutting automated science from million-dollar labs to a $1,749 desktop machine, with humans kept in the loop for approvals.
