An MIT experiment wired up 54 essay writers and found that those using ChatGPT showed severe memory deficits: 83% could not quote a single line from the essay they had just finished writing.
The researchers' explanation: the tool did the work, so the memory never formed — a phenomenon dubbed "cognitive debt." Jason Calacanis, reading the study aloud, put it bluntly: your brain atrophies if you don't do the work yourself.
The findings are frequently cited as landmark evidence in debates over whether AI writing tools should be allowed in educational settings.
