Fable 5.1 vs Astra: two frontier models face off in a Reddit joke-writing contest

ForwardLoop · reddit · 2026-09-06

A Reddit user asked Fable 5.1 and Astra to each write their funniest original joke, to be voted on by readers. Joke #1: a laid-off narrator thinks his park visits with the dog are bonding — the dog is actually networking and asked to use him as a reference. Joke #2: a self-help book called How to Stop Buying Self-Help Books whose chapter one is a coupon for the sequel.

Notable methodology details: both models self-estimated a 45% win probability with virtually no thinking time; one model spent 7.5x the thinking time writing its joke and 12x deciding whether to swap it (both stuck with their originals). All runs used High effort. Author identities will be revealed in 24 hours.
