Claude completes first formalized proof of Fermat's Last Theorem: 13M lines of Lean
asusarla · x · 2026-09-06
Anthropic announced that Claude completed the first full formalized proof of Fermat's Last Theorem — translating Andrew Wiles' 1995 proof into machine-checkable Lean, totaling over 13 million lines of code, the largest Lean proof ever written, formalizing 29,000+ supporting theorems along the way. Experts had expected the project to take years. The formalization was aided by Prove2Me, a collaborative theorem-proving platform that breaks paper results into small Lean 4 missions anyone can tackle; it grew out of a class by Henry Towsner with contributions from Tianyi Peng's student Shuze Chen.
