Anthropic formalizes Fermat's Last Theorem with Claude: 13M lines of Lean in 11 days
josephdviviano · x · 2026-09-06
Anthropic used an internal research model to formalize Andrew Wiles' 129-page proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, producing the largest Lean formalization ever at 13 million lines in just 11 days (mathematicians expected years). Per Chi Wang, initial runs with dozens of Claude agents failed not on math but on tracking shared project state; success came only after adopting Prove2Me's DAG of statements and proofs — at scale, "memory" must be external, structured infrastructure, not prompts.
