Ethan Mollick revisits the 2023 'Sparks of AGI' paper, which made much of GPT-4's ability to draw a unicorn-like figure in TiKZ—a scientific plotting language, not an image tool—as evidence of creativity and problem-solving. The paper faced heavy pushback at the time, but from GPT-4 to GPT-6, Mollick argues its qualitative experiments accurately sensed where LLM capabilities were heading and deserve retrospective credit.
