94% of UK students use AI for coursework: professors hide prompts and design AI-proof exams

A Nature feature surveys how academics worldwide are rethinking assessment in the AI era.

Scale: A 2026 HEPI survey of 1,054 UK undergraduates found 94% use generative AI for assessed work, with 12% directly pasting AI-generated text into coursework. A May study of 95,000+ students across 20 US universities estimated 9% knowingly broke rules using AI.

Countermeasures: Professors are designing exams AI can't pass, and embedding hidden AI prompts ("Trojan horses") in assignments to catch cheating. Hallucinated references are among the telltale signs educators are spotting.

The piece captures a wholesale reworking of academic assessment under pressure from LLMs.
