Anthropic: Claude autonomously wrote first machine-checked proof of Fermat's Last Theorem in 11 days

Anthropic announced the first complete computer-checked proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. Researcher Tianyi Peng set out to test Claude's formalization abilities; working largely autonomously over 11 days, Claude wrote 13 million lines of Lean and proved 29,500 intermediate theorems — a task the math community, including Kevin Buzzard's community project started in 2024, expected to take years. FLT, posed around 1637, was first proven by Andrew Wiles in 1995 in a 129-page proof that took months to verify by hand. Buzzard called it an extraordinary autoformalization achievement with major implications for research mathematics.
