Responding to Denis Noble's claim that consciousness is stochasticity at the cellular level, the author argues it is stochasticity at all levels: free choice feels volitional from inside and looks random from outside, and that asymmetry is the real ontological line between living systems and machines.
- Noble's Darwin/Wallace split (chance vs. choice) is one event seen from two aspects: the peahen's preference is a selection coefficient to the geneticist.
- The water-vs-silicon cut is wrong: silicon is as indeterminate as water at the electron level; a chip's determinism is engineered above physics via thresholds, clocks, and error correction so no fluctuation reaches computation.
- A cell does the opposite: it keeps fluctuations and selects among them (Noble's own immune example). The difference is who owns the noise.
- An LLM's temperature is an operator-set knob and the machine runs at zero; an organism has no temperature zero — a heart without jitter is dying.
- At every level, noise from above is choice from below.
