Anil Seth: departing from digital computation undermines computational functionalism

Neuroscientist Anil Seth argues that the further a biological system departs from standard digital computation, the less substrate-flexible its computations become. This (i) makes it less likely those computations could be implemented in silicon, and (ii) undermines computational functionalism—the idea that the right computations suffice for consciousness—since that assumption rests on computations mattering more than implementation details.
