A dev building an Epub plugin breaks down the evolution of TTF, OTF and WOFF2
vista8 · x · 2026-09-05
While building an Epub reading plugin for Obsidian, a developer compiled a quick history of font formats:
- TTF: created by Apple and Microsoft in the 1980s to counter Adobe; oldest format, best compatibility, but limited advanced typography features
- OTF: introduced by Microsoft and Adobe in the 1990s
- WOFF: created by Mozilla with font vendors, a W3C standard; essentially a compressed packaging of TTF/OTF designed for web delivery
- WOFF2: led by Google, also a W3C standard; 30% smaller than WOFF and 50% smaller than TTF, making it the go-to choice for modern web projects
