GPT 6 Astra coding hands-on: fast and durable, but Fable still wins on top-end tasks

After heavy hands-on testing, the author finds GPT 6 Astra offers a smooth development experience, free of the $200-subscription quota anxiety that came with Fable. Its UI design weakness has notably improved, and pairing it with Computer Use lets it catch and fix small bugs on its own — a big step up from Opus 5 and GPT 5.6.

Caveats remain: Astra consumes more tokens than GPT-5.6 but is far cheaper and more durable than Fable; for complex tasks and UI/product design, Fable 5.1 is still the first choice, with Astra slightly behind on UI details (though fixable with correction). The verdict: use Astra for most daily tasks, and the top coding tier is no longer Anthropic-only — the author plans to cancel one of his two Claude Max @20 subscriptions as Fable 5 is expected to lift its 50% limit.
