Claude formalizes Fermat's Last Theorem in 11 days: 13M lines of Lean, 29,500 theorems
ShayneRedford · x · 2026-09-05
Anthropic announced the first complete computer-checked proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. Led by researcher Tianyi Peng (Columbia University), Claude worked largely autonomously over 11 days to formalize Wiles's 129-page proof in Lean.
Key numbers:
- 13 million lines of Lean code and 29,500 intermediate theorems — Mathlib in its entirety is 2.2M lines
- FLT was posed in 1637; Wiles's 1995 proof took months to verify by hand
- It far exceeded the multi-year community formalization effort Kevin Buzzard kicked off in 2024 at Imperial College
Buzzard called it an "extraordinary autoformalization achievement," signaling AI could automate formalization of large swaths of modern mathematics.
