Caltech to host first research-level math AI hackathon with $2M+ in AI credits

_sathvikr · x · 2026-09-05

Caltech's Mathathon (Oct 30 – Nov 1, 2026) will be the first hackathon devoted to research-level mathematics: 100 teams get frontier models and $2M+ in AI credits to attack open conjectures over 40 hours, then defend results before leading mathematicians, with a second prize round after community verification. It cites recent AI math breakthroughs — the 80-year-old Erdős planar unit-distance conjecture disproved, the first explicit non-sofic group, and a claimed complex structure on the six-sphere. Sponsors include Anthropic, OpenAI, DARPA expMath, Cognition, a16z, and Y Combinator.
