Caltech Mathathon: first research-level math hackathon, $2M+ AI credits, 40 hours

_sathvikr · x · 2026-09-05

Caltech will host the first-ever research-level mathematics hackathon on Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026. One hundred teams get frontier model access to attack open conjectures and defend results before leading mathematicians, with $2M+ in AI credits and two prize rounds (second round after community verification). Sponsors include Anthropic, OpenAI, DARPA expMath, Cognition, Cloudflare, Y Combinator, a16z and 8VC. Context: recent AI breakthroughs in pure math — Erdős's 80-year-old planar unit-distance conjecture disproved, first explicit non-sofic group, a claimed complex structure on the six-sphere (unverified). The event asks how much AI can compress ideation-to-publication and what mathematicians' role becomes.
