Hugging Face downloads crawl at 700kb/s on 1Gbit lines, users float p2p model distribution
perelmanych · reddit · 2026-09-05
A Reddit user reports a month of erratic Hugging Face download speeds — fluctuating between 700kb/s and 98Mb/s on a 1Gbit connection, often stuck below 3Mb/s.
They argue the problem isn't isolated: as popular models grow to tens of gigabytes, centralized distribution won't scale, and even Nvidia post-acquisition will struggle to push terabytes to millions of users without outages. The proposed fix: p2p distribution over BitTorrent-style networks.
