GitHub's HydraFusion Matches Frontier Quality at Up to 67% Lower Cost

GitHub launched Project HydraFusion as a research preview in Copilot: controlled offline evaluations show its selective coding workflows match or exceed the Opus 5 baseline while cutting estimated workflow cost by up to 67%.
How it works:
- Treats workflow selection as an optimization problem, using capability signals for reasoning, code generation, debugging and tool use to pick the most efficient execution pattern per task
- Three patterns: Single (one model directly), Cascade (efficient model drafts, a quality gate escalates to a stronger model if needed), Critique (one model drafts, an independent read-only critic from another provider reviews and revises)
- Selects models across multiple providers at runtime
It's part of GitHub's strategy for automated semantic routing between local, cloud and compound models; developers just pick HydraFusion like any model, with orchestration hidden behind the scenes.
