COLM paper: legible chain-of-thought steps aren't necessarily important

A COLM 2026 paper, "Legibility is Not Interpretability: Comparing Judged and Actual Importance in Chain-Of-Thought Reasoning", finds that reasoning steps which look meaningful are not necessarily actually important, challenging the practice of evaluating CoT quality by readability.
